Shared Understanding

Current Definition

Natural communication and cooperative problem solving have to rely on shared knowledge bases which contain knowledge of a problem or domain that is common to both communication agents. The knowledge contained in the shared knowledge base does not have to be explicitly communicated.

  Shared understanding conceptually means that participants of a group (or community) have in common an understanding of what they communicate, or mean by their utterances. However different authors (Wittgestein) have argued that participants engaged in discourse "can never be completely sure that they have a common understanding of what was said [or meant]." Therefore, it seems that the definition of shared understanding is normally used in the place of "taken-as-shared understanding." One very important aspect of shared understanding is the possibility of negotiation of meanings. In any collaborative activity, participants interact with one another in an attempt to share understanding, by negotiating what they mean by they utterances and ideas.
